The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Presents

THE MIRACULOUS MIXES OF DJ SANTA CECILIA

A New Play by Amalia Ortiz • Directed by Robin LaVerne “Dragonfly” Wilson

SAN ANTONIO — The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Theater Arts program proudly announces the premiere of The Miraculous Mixes of DJ Santa Cecilia, an electrifying new theatrical work written by Amalia Ortiz and directed by Robin LaVerne “Dragonfly” Wilson. Performances will run March 19–21 and March 26–28 at 8 PM at SAY Sí’s Black Box Studiolocated at 1310 S. Brazos St., San Antonio, TX 78207 (one block south of the Guadalupe Theater). Tickets are $15 general admission and available at www.guadalupeculturalarts.org.

Set in a Los Angeles sweatshop warehouse during the height of the underground 1990s rave movement, The Miraculous Mixes of DJ Santa Cecilia imagines an alternate history in which a congregation of Indigenous immigrants encounter electronic dance music (EDM) within sacred ceremony—melding tribal tradition with industrial techno beats at the end of the millennium.

When mute immigrant Cecilia mysteriously disappears, an investigation unveils the story of her traumatic border crossing and transformation from a homeless queer outcast disowned by her family into a shamanic DJ who leads clandestine underground rituals. A chorus of undocumented sweatshop workers bears witness to her miracles and to the power of music, memory, and community.

Employing the Latin American tradition of magical realism—popularized by authors such as Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel García Márquez—the play offers an entertaining snapshot of 1990s U.S. rave culture while re‑envisioning it through the lens of an undocumented queer immigrant.

Amalia Ortiz is an award-winning poet, performer, and playwright who appeared on HBO’s Def Poetry and the NAACP Image Awards. She received the 2020 American Book Award for Oral Literature, and her book, Rant. Chant. Chisme., was named one of NBC Latino’s “10 Great Latino Books of 2015.” Amalia is a CantoMundo Fellow, Hedgebrook alumna, and former ArtPace performing-artist-in-residence. Her honors include grants from NALAC, the Mellon Foundation, and the City of San Antonio. Her play Pass It On was featured in the 2024 Teatro Salon series, and her band Las Hijas de la Madre received multiple project grants. Amalia holds an MFA in Creative Writing from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Dragonfly (Robin LaVerne Wilson) is an interdisciplinary performance artist whose ABSCONDED PROJECT has been featured in Ecumenica, Performance Art Journal, Hyperallergic, and Brooklyn Rail. Her work has been presented by venues such as Guggenheim Gallery at Chapman University, Theatre Neumarkt, and Grace Exhibition Space. A long-term collaborator with EARTH L.A.B. and La Pocha Nostra, she is also an alum of Creative Change, EmergeNYC, and Franklin Furnace. Dragonfly’s interactive game show Who Wants to Win $5 has been commissioned by multiple organizations. As Jump-Start Theatre’s 2025 INKubator artist, she launched SNACKED UP IN PRAYER, a touring solo show on caregiving and dementia. Robin holds a magna cum laude degree from Rutgers and completed MA coursework at CUNY. She is Gemini Ink’s 2025 volunteer of the year and an officer of Toastmasters Club 2207. Her primary vocation is caring for her mother. www.Dragonflyness.com

The Guadalupe Cultural Art Center’s Latino Bookstore and Gift Shop is the epicenter of the West Side Art District in San Antonio and an official Visitor Center for the state of Texas.

It is also a foundation for our community’s heart, soul, and voice.

Our selection of books ranges from best sellers and icons to self-published authors from our community. We also have books for children, young adults, and teens in English, Spanish, and Spanglish.

We are not a typical commercial enterprise. The GCAC Latino bookstore is housed on the Guadalupe Cultural Art Center’s complex, across the street from a historic theatre, and inside the legacy Progresso Building. We have an outdoor stage next door and an outdoor plaza across the street from there.

More importantly, even our stories tell stories. Our shelves house a curated selection of writers and books whose art, history, and culture are linked to the 40 year legacy of the GCAC or one of the fields or artists under its umbrella. This ranges from theatre to visual arts, to dance, music, to film. All of which have just as rich a legacy as our literary roots.

Although we focus on Texas Latino writers, Mexican American Studies, Chicano Scholars, and Icons, we go out of our way to showcase the many facets of our Community’s voice. So you will also find representation from the entire Latino family tree, California, New Mexico, New York.

Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center’s Teatro Salon proudly presents the World Premiere of the original solo performance of ‘Carmen From Mexico’ featuring Anna De Luna and directed by Jorge Piña. Scheduled for August 13th & 14th, 2021, Guadalupe Theater, 1301 Guadalupe St., San Antonio, TX 78207. Curtain is at 8pm with a general admission of $10.00.
Carmen From Mexico is an original solo multimedia play with live musical accompaniment that reflects the playwright’s own personal family history of her mother’s “illegal” immigration from Mexico to South Texas. Playwright Anna De Luna portrays her mother Carmen (in several stages of her youth) in this powerful true story of survival, struggle and yet sometimes comical experiences of adapting to South Texas racism and prejudices.
Anna De Luna has performed in various leading roles at the Guadalupe Theater and Jump-Start Performance Company.  She also appeared at the Public Theater in Anna In The Tropics for which she received a San Antonio Globe Award for Best Actress.  She has produced her original, solo plays Chicana Atheist, The AIDS Lady and My Arab Fall with sustaining success.  In 2016 Ms. De Luna was selected Creative of the Month by the City of San Antonio Department for Culture and Creative Development.  Carmen from Mexico was first presented as a short 20-minute work-in-progress at the Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival in 2018 and at Jump-Start Performance Company in 2019.
